Steinfurth Farm
Shumei’s Steinfurth farm was the first farm in Europe to implement
Natural Agriculture. Steinfurth, one of the largest production centers
of roses in Germany, is located just 40-minutes outside of Frankfurt.
In 2004, Shumei members met Mrs. Heinke von Löwe. Mrs. von
Löwe had been growing roses without the use of agricultural
chemicals for many years. Given their similar philosophies, a beautiful
partnership developed between Shumei and von Löwe and Shumei
opened a farm in Steinfurth.
The farm property currently covers 6.2 acres and is managed by Shumei
Natural Agriculture farmer Mitsuo Saito along with 8 other farmers
and staff members. The farm does extremely well producing over 100
varieties of vegetables mainly tomatoes, radish, egg plant, lettuce
and potatoes. Shumei participates in community-supported agriculture
(CSA) and sells Natural Agriculture vegetables to local farmers
markets and restaurants in the area with increasing popularity.
With Natural Agriculture, all their produce is European Union Organic
Standard Certified (EG-ECO Organic).
In 2007, a top-rated chef from Frankfurt hosted a cooking show using
Natural Agriculture ingredients from Shumei’s Steinfurth farm.
In addition to the culinary event, Shumei organized an art exhibition
with local artists and more than one thousand people visiting the
farm for the event.
