Shumei was founded on the philosophy and principles
taught by Mokichi Okada, a Japanese-born philosopher, art connoisseur,
agriculturalist and humanist who lived during the early and mid-decades
of the twentieth century. Its mission is to foster a deep appreciation
of the arts, an understanding of the inherent harmony within and
among the natural ecosystems, and a commitment to the unifying factors
that bring the diverse peoples of the world together as a global
family.
Shumei seeks to bring out the
highest qualities in humankind through greater exposure to the world’s
rich cultural heritage, and it also seeks to foster a deep respect
and appreciation for nature, which is the sustenance of life. Shinji
Shumeikai has a worldwide family of members who are committed to
the goals of leading a balanced life, working to uplift the condition
of others, and most importantly, striving through a number of activities
to contribute to a world at peace.
Over the last several years,
the international activities of Shumei have increased significantly
as the need for efforts toward global unity have also multiplied.
Activities in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia have
brought many new members into its fold, demonstrating the search
for constructive ways to ease the individual and collective tensions
to which so many are subjected. The philosophy of Shumei is one
envisioning an integral connection between the inner balance of
the individual and the degree of harmony in the world. The more
people can draw upon the arts and nature as an inner resource for
achieving peace, the more this will be reflected in positive acts
of service for the betterment of the human condition.
Shumei has a special interest
in developing leadership in the next generation. The continuation
of environmental degradation, and the exacerbation of ethnic and
religious differences in some parts of the world have made it more
important than ever that young people understand the interconnections
among peoples and between humankind and nature. Beyond fostering
this understanding, Shumei seeks to develop in young people a commitment
to positive action to rectify these ills at the local, national
and global levels. |
